Send In The Clowns 1

With my enduring compliments to the great composer and lyricist Steven Sondheim.  He could not have possibly imagined just how perfectly his lyrics and melody fit the cast of characters making up the Biden Administration

If you have ever been to a rodeo, you know that clowns play a vital role when bull riders are thrown off and rolling in the earth making them easy targets for the bull.  Clowns sweep in and with their colorful suits and antics, distract the bull and give the downed rider a chance to recover and get to safety.  And the Biden Administration has demonstrated an unbelievable talent for deflecting focus and distracting attention away from important issues.  An example of this is the headline in the N.Y. Times that read “Congress Considers Permanent Daylight Savings Time Legislation”, while we deal with rampant inflation, recession, declining productivity, an invasion of illegal aliens from our southern borders, escalating crime in our streets and communities, and the world is dealing with the prospects of facing WWIII and Russia’s aggression and genocide in Ukraine.

Every time I try to listen and make sense of things that President Biden, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigeig say, my thoughts immediately go to the lyrics of the song written by Steven Sondheim and sung so beautifully by Frank Sinatra, “Send in the Clowns”.

I know.  It sounds like I am singling out these three but I have to say they remind me of the Three Blind Mice (or maybe the Three Stooges). Their words and actions are at once comical and sad.  As an example, on the issue of Poland volunteering to provide two dozen MIG 29’s to Ukraine via Ramstein Airbase in Germany…“that would be a green light to Poland” said Anthony Blinken, only to be reversed and walked back by President Biden a day later.  Then there is Pete Buttegieg’s answer to the prices Americans now are paying for gasoline at the pump which was “we must get off using fossil fuels, so more people should buy electric cars”.  Let’s think about that one for a moment.  With people having difficulty paying $5.00 and $6.00 per gallon, Pistol Pete says the answer is for them to pay $60,000 for an electric car!  The insensitivity and inability to deal with reality is both stunning and frightening.  I may be wrong, but this statement probably puts Marie Antoinette and her “let them eat cake” remark to starving Parisians into second place for the all-time ignorant, callous and insensitive remarks award.

Of course, my comments apply in spades to other notable members of the Biden Cabinet, specifically the stumbling, bumbling Vice President Kamala Harris who has yet to make a positive contribution to our nation but has made an embarrassment of herself and our country on the world stage.  Then there is America’s Doctor, Anthony Fauci who changes direction more often than a weathervane in a hurricane and has been wrong equally as much.  Let’s not forget General Mark “White Rage” Milley and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, both of whom presided over the botched, dishonorable withdrawal from Afghanistan.  In addition to leaving Americans and Afghan Allies behind, we left $85 billion in American advanced weapons and systems which our enemies can use against us.  Why are these two individuals still employed?  Why have they not done the honorable thing and resigned?  Perhaps it is simply because they have no honor.

But let’s get back to the song which is the title of this essay….Send in the Clowns

At the end of this essay, I have reproduced the entire lyrics of this excellent piece but for the moment I’ll just focus on the last two stanzas of the five that make up the song:

Don’t you love a farce?
My fault I fear
I thought that you’d want what I want
Sorry my dear
But where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns
Don’t bother.  They’re here

Indeed, what has transpired in our nation since January 20, 2021 is a farce.  President Biden immediately launched his war on fossil fuels. He cancelled the Keystone XL Pipeline which, when completed would have been able to transport oil from Canada to refineries in the US at a third of the cost we currently pay for trucks and rail.  On top of that Biden unilaterally imposed restrictions on oil companies to drill on leased lands and suspended all oil exploration, including fracking, on government owned land, crippling our oil industry and effectively turning our nation from its position of energy independence achieved under President Trump to once again being dependent on foreign oil.  There are over six thousand products tied to petroleum, so it is not only the oil industry who has been harmed, but many other major industries.  All of this has led to significant inflationary cost increases in food, shipping, building and a host of other vital enterprises that contribute to the growth of our economy.  So, yes, this is all Biden’s fault, and it is self-inflicted.  He didn’t have to do it.  But he did.  It is also the fault of his cadre of brainless, gutless advisors and cabinet members who do nothing but echo the party line. And the clowns are all around him trying to give him cover.

The final stanza highlights the Biden Administration best:

Isn’t it rich?
Isn’t it queer
Losing my timing this late
In my career
But where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns
Well, maybe next year!

Well, I am well within the mark when I say that President Biden has lost a bit of his timing over his fifty years in government service, a service marked by chronic and habitual lying, deceit, plagiarism and as former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates once said “Joe Biden has been wrong on every major international policy decision in the past forty years’.  Biden and his Administration has not made a single policy decision since the day he took office that has improved the lives of Americans.  Rather, every action he has taken has weakened America, compromised our military and crippled our economy.  Those are just facts, and they are indisputable

The question is why?
